If this is the first time you’ve visited my blog, let me say a big WELCOME! 
 
This all started about a year ago when I finally got fed up with this fat lady who kept looking back at me every morning in the mirror.  I liked to pretend I was doing something about her, but she knew she had nothing to fear.  The minute I left the mirror, I could pretend once again that I wasn’t really all that overweight.  I didn’t really need to stick to my diet.  I was the master at forgiving myself for each and every trespass to my diet, and they came with far too much regularity.
 
So I decided to make this quest just a wee bit more public. 
 
I had no idea how public it would actually be!  My editor at the Albuquerque Tribune loved the idea of a Diet Diaries column, so I started sharing my slightly skewed view of dieting with local readers.  Then Dr. Laura Schlessinger read my debut column on her national radio show, and my audience grew by leaps and bounds.  Now, instead of just quitting on myself if I decided to give up this silly notion of sticking to my diet, I was going to have to explain to readers nationwide why I was throwing in the towel. 
 
It’s been an interesting journey.  At times, I’ve been very successful – down twenty-five pounds in the first few months.  But the rough times have been a part of my journey as well.  Gaining back part of the weight when it got too scary to keep losing.  Looking at the reasons for not wanting to be skinny – no matter how much I told myself I really did want that skinny woman to win.  And, recently, learning that sometimes the diet is just the tip of the iceberg.
 
I’m glad I went public.  I would have quit a long time ago.  And I would have missed out on some of the best support a dieter can have!  Can you imagine how wonderful it is – after a particularly trying day – to log in here and read an encouraging note from a kind, retired gentleman in California or another struggling mom in Virginia?  It’s kept me going!
